US Treasury Secretary Besant: High-end chip production should be partially moved out of Taiwan
On September 24, US Treasury Secretary Besant said in an interview with Fox Business Network that the US is doing its utmost to ensure a secure supply of semiconductors for the US or other close allies and to mitigate the risk of Taiwan's near-total dominance in the market.
"The biggest flaw in the global economy is that 99% of high-performance chips are produced in Taiwan," he said. "They do a great job and have a well-established ecosystem, but from a risk management perspective, we must shift some of our demand—whether it's 30%, 40%, or 50%—back to the US or our allies, be it Japan or the Middle East. We are working on this every day."
