Their true meaning should be that when the entire market crashes, they can remain stable or decline slightly, ensuring your account doesn't experience the same wild fluctuations as the market. When I bought defensive stocks back then, I was expecting a big rally. Looking back now, that seems quite unreasonable. Thinking about it this way, Berkshire Hathaway has still fulfilled its mission, at least in the half month since I bought it.
I did some portfolio adjustments last night. The account loss has recovered a bit from the 50% plunge caused by Amazon. I'm hoping to break even this month. Let's go!
