Historical performance when VIX > 29

The current VIX is 27.44, approaching the 29 threshold. Historical data shows:

- After the VIX closing price exceeds 29, the S&P 500 has averaged a 24% increase over the next 12 months

- There have been 265 instances of VIX > 29 in the past 15 years, and this pattern is quite stable

Recent examples

- April 2025 tariff shock: After extreme fear bottomed out, the S&P 500 rebounded nearly 40% from its low

- March 2020 COVID-19: The fear & greed index fell to single digits, followed by an epic rebound

- The two times in the past year when the fear & greed index fell into single digits both proved to be excellent buying opportunities

The probability of a market rebound historically exceeds 90%, but whether you can capture that rebound depends on whether your leverage can withstand a possible final dip.

Historically, buying during extreme fear almost always makes money, but only if you can hold on until the rebound.
