A day of broad market sell-off, yet $SPDR Energy Select(XLE.US), $Select Sect Spdr Util(XLU.US), and $SPDR S&P Biotech(XBI.US) all edged up slightly. $CHINA SHENHUA(01088.HK) barely moved. Defensive sectors turned green against the trend. Why did money flow into these areas when tech crashed? It looks like a classic flight to safety rotation—utilities and energy have stable cash flows and solid dividends, biotech is decoupled from the AI capex cycle, and these low-correlation, stable-cash-flow assets are easily picked up during broad market panic. Whether this rotation can persist in the short term depends on whether the VIX will retreat further and if risk appetite has genuinely shifted towards defense.
