Gotion starts delivering unified battery cells to VW

China's battery giant Gotion High-tech (SHE: 002074) has commenced mass production of its Unified Cells for Volkswagen, with deliveries to the German automaker beginning on November 20.
This marks the entry into large-scale production of the five-year strategic partnership between Volkswagen, its battery unit PowerCo, and Gotion, according to a statement released last night.
Gotion will supply Volkswagen with high-performance lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and other unified cells from 2026 to 2032, the battery maker said.

A delivery ceremony was held yesterday in Hefei, Anhui province -- where Gotion is headquartered -- attended by Volkswagen CTO Thomas Schmall, PowerCo CEO Frank Blome, and Gotion chairman Li Zhen.
The unified cell is a standardized battery solution featuring high compatibility, enabling a single size to accommodate different chemical systems and adapt to multiple vehicle platforms, according to Gotion.
The cell incorporates technological innovations in integration efficiency, fast-charging performance, safety protection, and low-temperature adaptability, the battery maker said.
The delivered unified cells achieve world-class levels in energy density, safety performance, and cost control, stated Zhang Hongli, Gotion director and chairman of its Hefei base.
During the ceremony, Gotion unveiled a battery pack system developed based on the unified cells.
Building upon supplying unified cells to Volkswagen, Gotion will provide battery products for multiple Volkswagen platforms, the company said.
Volkswagen and Gotion have maintained a long-standing partnership, with Volkswagen now being the battery manufacturer's largest shareholder.
In July 2021, the two parties signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement, under which Gotion developed the first generation of Unified Cells for Volkswagen's regular production models in China.
The Unified Cell project, located in Hefei's Xinzhan district, has an annual production capacity of 20 GWh, according to Gotion's previous disclosures.
Gotion ranks among the world's largest power battery manufacturers, with a 3.7 percent global market share and 29.7 GWh of battery installations from January to September, placing it seventh globally, according to data released earlier this month by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.
Gotion becomes VW's designated battery supplier for markets outside of China
The purchase order involves LFP Unified Cell products with the same design style and specifications as those for the Chinese market for Volkswagen's full range of NEVs.
