Delta Air Lines cancels route permanently, offers refunds

While many airlines go into 2026 facing a number of financial challenges, the third-largest airline in the U.S. has been doing better than most.In its last earnings call released in October 2025, Delta Air Lines beat analyst expectations with $15.2 billion in revenue and $1.71 in adjusted earnings per share compared to the $1.53 expected by the average analyst consensus.With the next earnings report scheduled to come out on Jan. 13, the projected outlook for the last quarter of the year is between $1.60 to $1.90 earnings per share, although the airline also expects a $200 million cut into its profits due to the 43-day government shutdown in October and November.Delta to pull Detroit-Binghamton flight on February 14As part of its efforts to trim its network of non-profitable routes, Delta Air Lines has confirmed that it will no longer fly into Greater Binghamton Airport (BGM) in upstate New York along the Pennsylvania border.With the larger Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) a two-hour drive away, BGM has in the last two years gone through a $54 million renovation but struggled to retain airlines willing to run flights.Related: Another airline files for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, all flights canceledAfter low-cost carrier Avelo pulled out of the Binghamton market due to a lack of profitability in 2024, Delta became the only carrier serving the area. The airline's daily flight from Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) will run for the last time on Feb. 14. "We are in active discussions with Delta and are working closely with our state, local, and federal partners to re-establish passenger service as soon as possible. We also continue to have meetings with multiple airlines as we explore opportunities to expand air service at BGM. Travelers can also initiate the refund independently online through their flight booking.United Airlines has not flown into BGA since 2016 while American Airlines left in 2017. With Binghamton located far enough from both New York and Syracuse to make a regional airport useful to the community, many locals are left wondering about its future as a commercial airport."This is tough, this is a very tough situation to be in," Heefner said. "It's not one that we want to be in but I think there is opportunity.
