Investors are assessing key U.S. economic data that may influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decisions this year, and European stock markets rose on Friday. The pan-European STOXX 600 index closed up 1%.
The UK FTSE 100 index closed up 79 points or 0.8%, at 10,124 points.
The German DAX index closed up 134 points or 0.5%, at 25,261 points.
The French CAC 40 index closed up 118 points or 1.4%, at 8,362 points
