Apple's &#34;Made in India&#34; strategy is accelerating, with India becoming the second hub for global iPhone production.
According to reports, Apple is expected to assemble about 55 million iPhones in India by 2025, a year-on-year increase of approximately 53%, accounting for about a quarter of the global annual output. Notably, Apple is currently assembling all models of the latest iPhone 17 series in India, including the high-end Pro and Pro Max, achieving full coverage of its flagship product line in India.
This move reflects a profound shift in Apple's global supply chain landscape. India is rapidly transitioning from a marginal role of handling older models and standard devices to becoming a core production center covering the latest flagship products. Apple's three major manufacturing partners in India—Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron—are deeply involved in the capacity layout in India, which is being developed into the second-largest iPhone manufacturing base to serve global demand.
At the same time, the policy environment supporting this expansion is facing a critical juncture. India's current smartphone production subsidy policy is set to expire on March 31 of this year, and companies like Apple are negotiating with New Delhi on a new round of export incentive programs, with the direction of policy directly affecting whether India can maintain its manufacturing cost competitiveness.
<h2>Production Surges by 53%, Rapid Expansion of India's Share</h2>
Reports indicate that Apple will assemble approximately 55 million iPhones in India by 2025, a significant increase from 36 million units the previous year. Apple produces about 220 million to 230 million iPhones globally each year, and India's share is rapidly expanding.
Due to tariff pressures, Apple and its suppliers are accelerating the shift of production for devices aimed at the U.S. market to alternative manufacturing destinations, with India being one of the main beneficiaries. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme launched by Prime Minister Modi's government provides important policy support for this capacity transfer, with related subsidies partially offsetting India's structural cost disadvantages in supply chain support and logistics. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment on the above data.
Apple is currently assembling all models of the iPhone 17 series in India, covering the high-end Pro and Pro Max, marking a comprehensive extension of India's manufacturing capabilities to Apple's flagship product line. Manufacturing partners such as Foxconn, Tata Electronics, and Pegatron are also producing older models like the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 for local sales and export.
<h2>Deepening Supply Chain Layout, Increasing Localization</h2>
Apple is deepening and broadening its cooperation with local suppliers in India, actively promoting the localization of key component production. Reports indicate that the relevant components include lithium-ion batteries, watch and phone casings, as well as accessories like AirPods, which are important components of Apple's complete local supply chain ecosystem.
However, the costs of electronic product assembly and component manufacturing in India are still higher than in some competing countries like Vietnam, prompting companies like Apple and Samsung to continue seeking greater policy support from the Indian government.
Apple's layout in India has surpassed a single manufacturing level. Sales of Apple products in the Indian market have exceeded $9 billion, and Apple plans to launch Apple Pay payment services in India later this year, with its retail store network currently expanded to six locations
