The struggling automotive giant Stellantis is reportedly in talks with Chinese car manufacturers to seek investment in its European operations, aiming to gain financial, technological, and production support in the European market while focusing its investments on the Americas.
On March 12, Bloomberg reported that Stellantis executives have held discussions with Xiaomi and XPeng to explore various options for restructuring its European business, including the potential acquisition of Maserati or other brand equity by Chinese car manufacturers, as well as opening European manufacturing capacity to Chinese partners.
The report noted that insiders indicated there is currently no certainty of any deal being reached. Following the news, XPeng's U.S. ADR rose by 5.5%, Xiaomi's stock increased by 2%, and Stellantis' stock also narrowed its decline.
Analysts pointed out that these negotiations reflect the starkly different development trajectories of Stellantis' two major business segments in Europe and the Americas, marking a profound strategic restructuring for the automotive giant formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group in 2021.
<h2>Stellantis' European Business Under Pressure, Seeking &#34;Blood Transfusion&#34; from Chinese Capital</h2>
Stellantis' European operations have long faced multiple pressures, including overcapacity, intense competition, and high costs associated with electrification.
Brands such as Fiat, Opel, and Peugeot are under siege in the European market, having to contend with traditional rivals like Volkswagen and Renault, while also facing ongoing encroachment from Chinese brands like BYD—currently, one in every ten cars sold in Europe comes from a Chinese brand.
Bloomberg's latest report stated that insiders revealed Stellantis' management believes that higher investment returns in the future will come from the U.S. market, maintaining a cautious attitude towards making large-scale investments in Europe.
At the same time, bringing in Chinese car manufacturers to invest in European operations could provide Stellantis with advanced electric vehicle technology and software capabilities, while Chinese manufacturers could gain better access to the European market.
In addition to engaging with Xiaomi and XPeng, Stellantis is also advancing cooperation with Chinese car manufacturers along multiple lines.
According to previous Bloomberg reports, Stellantis is considering deepening cooperation with its existing Chinese partner, Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology, as both parties explore synergies in electric vehicles and software technology aimed at the European market.
In the U.S. market, Stellantis is advancing a new model investment plan of approximately $13 billion, with brands like Jeep and Ram trucks already benefiting from a preliminary rebound in demand.
Some insiders indicated that this restructuring may ultimately lead to further separation of Stellantis' European and American business segments, but a complete split is not the current focus of discussions.
In response, Stellantis issued a strong statement, declaring, &#34;We categorically state that the company is considering a split plan is unfounded, and any contrary assertions are purely fabricated.&#34;
<h2>Huge Impairment Dragging Down, Strategic Transformation Urgent</h2>
Reports indicate that the backdrop of this negotiation is that Stellantis has just announced record impairments and write-offs, totaling €22.2 billion (approximately $25.7 billion), most of which are related to the company's decision to scale back its electric vehicle strategy.
This strategic reversal—including the cancellation of battery joint ventures and multiple future models—wiped out about a quarter of the company's market value in a single day.
Current CEO Antonio Filosa, who took over last year, has been focused on stabilizing the company's operations. Filosa is expected to disclose more details about the company's future plans at the Investor Day in the U.S. on May 21
