Geely's Li Shufu: Methanol electric vehicles have potential for development and research
According to the Shanghai Securities Journal, Li Shufu, Chairman of Geely Holding Group, stated at the "Smart Electric Vehicle Development High-Level Forum (2026)" that both methanol electric passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are relatively lighter, have better overall ecological carbon reduction effects, superior economic efficiency throughout their life cycle, are convenient to use, and are more practical. This represents a new technological path for the application of green energy in heavy transportation.
Li Shufu pointed out that the energy density of methanol is equivalent to more than ten times that of lithium-ion batteries. For vehicles with the same carrying capacity, the weight of lithium battery vehicles is about twice that of methanol electric vehicles, meaning that the heavier the vehicle, the higher the energy consumption.
Li Shufu believes that methanol electric vehicles have certain development and research potential. The development of green energy from methanol in mainland China, particularly its application in the transportation sector, is a very practical scientific and technological route
