The model is based on the company’s proprietary DM-i hybrid technology and combines a battery-electric motor with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. The manufacturer aims to strengthen its position in Europe’s B-segment with this compact car, with sales set to begin in the summer.</p><p>According to the Chinese manufacturer, the Dolphin G DM-i is its first DM-i model developed specifically for Europe. It is available in four trim levels: Active, Boost, Comfort, and Sport. The compact car is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor delivering 120 kW of power and 210 Nm of torque. The electric motor handles propulsion in most driving situations, while the 1.5-litre petrol engine charges the battery or assists the wheels, depending on the operating conditions.</p><h2>PHEV with up to 105 km of electric range</h2><p>BYD offers the model with two battery sizes. The entry-level version features a Blade Battery with 7.42 kWh, enabling an electric WLTP range of 40 kilometres. The Boost, Comfort, and Sport variants are equipped with an 18.3 kWh battery, which provides an electric range of up to 105 kilometres. BYD states the combined total range as up to 1,040 kilometres. The larger battery variants can be charged with up to 39 kW DC, with the manufacturer claiming a charging time of 26 minutes to increase the state of charge from 10 to 80 per cent. The weighted fuel consumption is reported as 1.4 litres per 100 kilometres when the battery is charged. CO₂ emissions are expected to range from 32 to 60 g/km, depending on the version.</p><p>Measuring 4.16 metres in length with a wheelbase of 2.61 metres, BYD positions the Dolphin G DM-i in the European compact car segment. The boot volume is 425 litres, expandable to up to 1,225 litres by folding down the rear seats. Depending on the trim level, the equipment includes an infotainment system with up to a 12.8-inch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, a 360-degree camera, and integrated Google connectivity with Google Maps and Google Assistant.</p><p>Additionally, the vehicle supports NFC access via smartphone and, in higher trim levels, the vehicle-to-load (V2L) function. As standard, the model also includes numerous driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and front and rear cross-traffic alerts. Orders are expected to be available at European dealerships before the summer holidays, with the first deliveries scheduled for early autumn.</p><h2>BYD leverages PHEV offensive for growth in Europe</h2><p>With the Dolphin G DM-i, BYD is introducing a plug-in hybrid into a segment where electrified powertrains have so far been predominantly offered as full hybrids or mild hybrids. Competitors include models from Toyota, which rely on hybrid powertrains without external charging capabilities in this vehicle class.</p><p>Furthermore, the launch of the Dolphin G DM-i could be particularly relevant given the current trade policy environment in Europe. In autumn 2024, the EU approved additional compensatory tariffs on battery-electric vehicles produced in China. However, these measures apply exclusively to pure electric cars (BEVs) and not to plug-in hybrids.</p><p>For BYD, the model is part of its broader expansion strategy in Europe. Company CEO Wang Chuanfu recently stated that BYD aims to become the world’s largest automotive manufacturer within the next five years. Currently, Toyota holds the title of the world’s largest carmaker.
