I see a lot of people bashing Hong Kong stocks, complaining that the HSI still has negative returns this year (-0.95%), while the Nasdaq is already at 13.03%, saying they want to give up on HK stocks. For long-term investment, I of course encourage investing in US stocks, the returns are much better. A portion of my own portfolio is in US stock ETFs for DCA long-term investment.

As for mid/short-term trading, although I also trade US stocks quite frequently, I still quite like trading HK stocks 🤣 Why take what others discard? First, HK stocks match my time zone well, I'm more alert and don't have to stay up late to trade, making fewer wrong decisions. Second, its long-term discount doesn't mean there are no opportunities. A trader must not only make money in a bull market; being able to make money in bear and flat markets is what makes an "all-weather trader." Trading HK stocks has given me a lot of this kind of training.

9988 is one of the HK stocks I really enjoy trading, mainly using an options + stock short-term trading strategy. The chart below shows my returns from trading 9988 (January 2023 to January 2025—not sure why Futu only calculates up to early 2025). Excluding the big rally in 2025, it's about an 80% return, while the HSI return for the same period was only about 1.4%. So, not moving doesn't mean no opportunity 🤣 as long as you use the right strategy.
