Amazon.com, Inc. $Amazon(AMZN.US) continues to showcase robust operational execution across its dual profit engines: e-commerce and cloud computing. In its recent financial reporting, Amazon demonstrated significant operating leverage, highlighted by a record 13.1% operating margin driven by the rapid re-acceleration of Amazon Web Services (AWS). While its core marketplace remains dominant—buoyed by record-setting events like Prime Day—the real catalyst for the company’s current expansion is its high-margin advertising services and cloud sectors.
Despite these strong fundamentals, the stock has underperformed relative to pure-play artificial intelligence chipmakers and power suppliers, trading at roughly $232 per share, which represents an attractive entry point at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 27x.The primary near-term headwind pressuring the stock price is management’s aggressive infrastructure investment cycle. Amazon has planned roughly $200 billion in capital expenditures for 2026, heavily focused on building out data centers and scaling its AI infrastructure. This massive spending surge has temporarily compressed trailing free cash flow.
However, the market appears to be underestimating the structural margin benefits of Amazon’s proprietary hardware. The company’s custom AI silicon portfolio—including its Graviton and Trainium chips—has already surpassed an annual revenue run rate of $20 billion, allowing AWS to fulfill heavy enterprise workloads at a significantly lower cost than wholesale GPU alternatives. For long-term investors, the disconnect between Amazon’s record operational health and its flat year-to-date stock performance presents a compelling “bargain hiding in plain sight”. Wall Street remains overwhelmingly bullish, maintaining a consensus “Moderate Buy” to “Strong Buy” rating with an average twelve-month price target of approximately $313, representing a projected upside of over 34%.
