UOB (U11): Sell the Product, Own the Customer
UOB’s S$555 million sale of UOB Asset Management (UOBAM) to Allianz Global Investors is less about exiting wealth management and more about owning the customer, not the product. The deal transfers S$42 billion of AUM and crystallises a S$330 million pre-tax gain, lifting CET1 by 14bp. UOB retains distribution through a strategic partnership, allowing advisers to offer open-architecture products while earning recurring fees without fund-management risks. (Dr Wealth)
That is strategically positive and capital-efficient, but the immediate earnings impact is modest. The gain equates to roughly 16–17 cents per share, while the bigger prize is potentially higher-quality, scalable wealth fees. UOB’s 1Q26 net profit was S$1.44 billion, ROE 11.5%, CET1 15.3%, and net fee income remains a structural strength. (UOB Group)
Technically, U11 had climbed 23.8% YTD by end-July to S$43.40, approaching its S$45.15 52-week high—momentum is strong but upside looks increasingly priced in. (StockInvest)
At ~1.46x 1Q26 NAV, valuation is no longer cheap. DBS also maintains HOLD, with S$35.70 target price. (DBS Bank)
Verdict: HOLD. Fundamentals remain solid and the UOBAM disposal is strategically accretive, but investors should add only on meaningful pullbacks, rather than chase current momentum.
