Iggy’s Journal: MAS Does Not Set an Interest Rate. Three Questions About What Its October Decision Changes for You

Tue 13 Oct 2026 | Midday

The Numbers

“MAS tightening” sounds like an interest-rate rise, but MAS says it does not use domestic interest rates as a tool. What it can adjust is the Singapore dollar’s policy band: its slope, its width and its centre. In April and July the change was to the slope, while the width and the centre stayed the same. The October policy statement is due on Wednesday.

My Personal Take

A headline can call a decision tightening while the instrument is a different number from the one on a loan statement. What a change to the slope reaches in a household budget, and what it leaves alone, is the question I take up in today’s episode, in three parts.
