Context

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN) is currently trading at $248.00, sitting roughly 9% below its all-time high of $287.20 achieved in August 2026. The broader market narrative is heavily focused on the tension between massive AI infrastructure spending and top-line cloud growth. In its most recent Q2 earnings report, Amazon posted stellar numbers: net sales jumped 20% to $200.6 billion, and AWS growth accelerated to 37% year-over-year ($42.2 billion), fueled by surging generative AI workloads.

However, this massive growth comes with a steep price tag. Amazon raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditures target to a staggering $220 billion due to skyrocketing infrastructure and memory costs. This aggressive spending caused trailing 12-month free cash flow to turn negative at -$7.6 billion, presenting a clear near-term headwind.

My trade

• Primary Execution Strategy: Buy half of the intended position size at the current price of $248.00 to secure exposure.

• Contingency Execution Strategy: Reserve the remaining 50% of the capital to deploy immediately post-earnings on October 29. If the stock dips due to high CapEx numbers, I will buy the pullback; if it breaks out on strong backlog conversion, I will buy the momentum.

• Alternative Derivatives Structure: For options traders, an attractive alternative is a Bull Call Spread (buying a slightly out-of-the-money call and selling a higher strike call). This limits premium exposure and mitigates the inevitable post-earnings implied volatility (IV) crush.

Takeaway

Amazon remains a top-tier secular growth compounder, but investors must tolerate near-term free cash flow volatility as the company builds out its AI dominance. While the $220 billion infrastructure bill is heavy, it acts as a massive competitive moat that secures Amazon’s role as a primary infrastructure winner in the agentic AI era.
