Singapore Airlines (SIA) looks like a case where the good news needs to be viewed with some caution.

The latest move by Air India to cut costs is encouraging. Procurement, maintenance, ground operations and overheads are obvious areas where savings can be made. For SIA, which owns 25.1% of Air India, a successful turnaround would remove a major drag on earnings.

But I wouldn’t call this a turnaround yet.

Air India has already lost heavily and SIA has taken a sizeable hit from its investment. There is also the possibility of further capital being required. That means SIA shareholders could continue funding a business that is still trying to prove it can make money.

The other side of the story is SIA itself. The core business remains profitable and cash-generative, while Scoot provides another growth engine. The recent weakness in reported earnings can also be misleading because of accounting effects and Air India’s losses.

For income investors, the dividend remains an important reason to stay invested. But I would be careful about assuming the recent dividend payout can simply be repeated every year. The ordinary dividend is more sustainable; special dividends should be treated as a bonus rather than an entitlement.

At around the current valuation, I wouldn’t rush to sell everything. If SIA is already a large portfolio position, however, taking some profit makes sense.

My preference would be to keep roughly 70–80% as a core holding and trim 20–30% if the share price provides a good opportunity.

The key thing to watch isn’t another Air India cost-cutting announcement. It is whether Air India’s losses actually narrow.

If they do, SIA could benefit meaningfully. If losses persist and another large capital injection is needed, I would become much more defensive.
