<p>Jose Mourinho has been fired as manager of Tottenham Hotspur after a little over a season and a half in charge.</p> 
<p>The Portuguese, who was appointed in November 2019, leaves before Tottenham plays Manchester City in Sunday's Carabao Cup final. </p> 
 
<p>The news was revealed the day after Spurs said it had, along with 11 other European clubs, agreed to join a new European Super League. The immediate backlash from fans and the organizers of domestic competitions has been fierce, but the move is reportedly nothing to do with Mourinho's firing. </p> 
<p>Spurs was top of the league in December but currently 7<sup>th</sup>, likely to miss out on qualifying for next season's Champions League. It has won just one league match in its last five and also suffered a disastrous Europa League exit to Dinamo Zagreb. The team’s defensive style of play has also frequently frustrated fans.</p> 
 
<p>In a statement, Spurs' chairman Daniel Levy said: </p> 
<p>&#34;Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club. Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. </p> 
 
<p>&#34;On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged. He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.&#34;</p> 
 
<p>The club's former midfielder Ryan Mason will take charge of the team for this week's Premier League match against Southampton and the final against City. He is expected to be in charge for the rest of the season, alongside academy head of coaching Chris Powell.</p> 
<p>Neither is likely to get the job on a full-time basis, meaning Spurs will be looking for a new manager this summer. Here are some of the contenders. </p> 
<h3>Julian Nagelsmann </h3> 
<p>The 33-year-old German is the early favorite and would be a popular choice with fans, the majority of whom never warmed to Mourinho.</p> 
<p>Nagelsmann has done an impressive job with RB Leipzig (including knocking Spurs out of European competition last season) and favors an attacking, exciting style of play. The big competition is likely to be from Bayern Munich, who apparently want Nagelsmann to replace outgoing boss Hansi Flick.</p>

<h3>Brendan Rodgers</h3> 
<p>Spurs would love to swap places with Leicester City at the moment – the Foxes are third in the Premier League table and have an FA Cup final to look forward to. Rodgers deserves plenty of credit for that and is another who likes his teams to play flowing soccer. </p> 
<p>However, he has a contract until 2025 and, even if Spurs want him, would he want to leave? </p> 
<h3>Scott Parker</h3> 
<p>The former Spurs player guided Fulham to promotion to the Premier League last season but is struggling to keep them in it. With only 100 matches as a first-team manager under his belt, appointing him to Spurs' top job would be a big gamble. </p> 
<h3>Ledley King</h3> 
<p>King would be a popular – if highly risky – pick as manager. The former central defender is one of Spurs' best players in recent history and was made assistant first team coach under Mourinho. However, with no experience as a manager, he is more likely to be given another role under the next manager than the job itself.</p> 
<h3>Mauricio Pochettino</h3> 
<p>A romantic, but again unlikely, option. Pochettino took Spurs to the Champions League final and had the club regularly finishing in the top four during his time in charge. He was sacked in favor of Mourinho after a poor run and is currently manager of Paris Saint-Germain. </p> 
<p>Pochettino still has a good relationship with Levy and has spoken of his desire to one day return to Spurs. If he wins the league and Champions League in his first season in Paris, could he be persuaded to make an earlier return than expected? Probably not, but as the last 24 hours has shown, stranger things have happened in soccer.</p>
