Destiny 2’s Guardian Games launches tomorrow, and instead of a new exotic like we got last year, we are getting a new catalyst for the new exotic that we got last year, Heir Apparent. 
 
Heir Apparent has new relevance this season, perhaps not gameplay-wise, but lore-wise, as it’s named after Caiatl and the lore on the gun is one of the earliest stories about her. While this hasn’t been confirmed I expect Caiatl will have some part to play in Guardian Games by the end. 
The catalyst, however, is a new addition, and we pretty much know everything about it ahead of time, thanks to some datamining that really can’t be considered spoilers because I mean, come on, it’s a catalyst. 
 
Heir Apparent Acquisition: 
If you did not get the gun last year, the weapon can now be acquired through a quest. 
 
Catalyst Abilities: 
The Heir Apparent catalyst will increase the strength of its protective arc shield, and it will partially reload the magazine of the gun when destroyed. And of course create the usual fountain of orbs on multikills. Since I only really use this gun on War Rig Titan, I’m not sure how much the magazine refill will do for me, but I suppose it’s better than just a flat stats buff. And who knows, it’s possible that Machine Guns could get some sort of buff next season, at long last, now that Rocket Launchers have been addressed.

Catalyst Drop Source: 
The catalyst has a chance to drop from banking Gold or Platinum medals once you own the gun. 
Catalyst Requirements: 
These steps were just datamined, and they are tied to Guardian Games, meaning you will likely be unable to acquire the catalyst if you miss the event completely. 
 
<ul> 
 <li>Earn (50) points by obtaining medals. Higher tier medals are worth more points.</li> 
 <li>Complete (3) Contender Cards (these are purchased from Eva and have objectives for different activities, Trials, Nightfalls, Strikes, Gambit and Crucible).</li> 
 <li>Collect (90) Competitive Spirit by getting kills with Machine Guns in the Daily Focus playlist. Precision blows grant bonus progress.</li> 
 <li>700 total kills, which sounds like a lot until you take this thing into Altars of Sorrow.</li> 
</ul> 
 
So, it’s a good amount of stuff, but the overall numbers don’t sound like they’ll be that tough over the course of the event. Unless you have terrible luck and the catalyst never drops in the first place, I guess. 
My guess is that like last time, Heir Apparent will not simply show up in the exotic kiosk after this, so you’ll want to participate to make sure you get it. And I would not expect the catalyst to simply become a playlist drop after this event, at least not for a very long while, so you’ll want to make sure to get that done.
