President Trump has postponed higher tariffs on certain furniture and kitchen cabinets until January 1, 2027, providing relief to home-furnishing stocks. Companies like Williams-Sonoma and RH saw premarket gains following the announcement. The tariffs, initially set to increase from 25% to 30% for upholstered furniture and from 25% to 50% for kitchen cabinets, were delayed due to ongoing trade negotiations. The housing market's struggles also impacted these stocks in 2025, but the delay may improve their outlook for the upcoming year.

By Barbara Kollmeyer A troubled U.S. housing market, coupled with fear of tariff costs passed on to inflation-weary consumers, weighed on home-furnishing stocks in 2025 The new year could bring relief for furniture retailers such as Williams-Sonoma as the Trump White House is delaying planned higher tariffs. Shares of some home-furnishing companies were moving higher in premarket on Friday after President Donald Trump delayed new levies on U.S. imports of certain furniture and kitchen cabinets for a year. Under a proclamation published late Wednesday by the White House, planned increases in tariffs set to kick in on Jan. 1 for upholstered furniture, kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities will be delayed until Jan. 1, 2027. Consumers had been braced for higher U.S.-imposed tariffs, with levies on certain upholstered items of furniture facing a rise to 30% from 25%, while those on imported kitchen cabinets and vanities were due to rise to 50% from 25%, following a September proclamation from Trump. The tariffs were blamed on "large scale 'FLOODING' of these products into the United States" from other countries. China and Vietnam are the top importers. "The United States continues to engage in productive negotiations with trade partners to address trade reciprocity and national security concerns with respect to imports of wood products," read the New Year's Eve proclamation. Shares of RH (RH), formerly known as Restoration Hardware gained 2.4% in premarket trading on Friday. Earlier in December, RH shares got a lift after the company recorded higher fiscal third-quarter revenue, though narrowed its sales outlook to a lower end of a previously shared range. The stock fell 54% in 2025. Shares of Williams-Sonoma (WSM) gained about 1% in premarket, after finishing last year down 3%. The company in November reported higher third-quarter profit and sales, shrugging off tariff concerns. Wayfair (W) rose 1% in premarket trading. That stock surged 126% in 2025, with the home-furnishings company reporting improved third-quarter revenue from shoppers buying ahead of tariffs rising to 25%. Shares of MillerKnoll (MLKN), whose interior-designer-favored brands include Hay, Herman Miller, Knoll and the retailer DWR, were inactive in premarket trading. The company's supply chain is more U.S. focused, hence less exposed to tariff concerns. Shares lost 18% in 2025. In addition to concerns for some companies over the planned Trump-imposed tariffs, a troubled housing market also weighed on some shares of home-furnishing goods companies last year.
