The Hypersonic Test Bottleneck Is Real — And Five Companies Are Building the Infrastructure to Fix It

The U.S. defense sector faces a significant bottleneck in hypersonic weapons testing, prompting five companies—Starfighters Space, Kratos Defense, AeroVironment, BWX Technologies, and Mercury Systems—to develop necessary infrastructure. The Pentagon's FY 2027 budget includes a historic $71.2 billion for the Space Force, with $17.5 billion allocated for missile defense. Starfighters Space has introduced its F-104 fleet as an airborne test platform, simulating conditions of rocket launches. Meanwhile, Kratos is establishing a new facility in Indiana to enhance hypersonic materials testing capabilities, addressing critical gaps in the current infrastructure.
