Power suggests consumer interest in electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States holding strong as rising gas prices push more shoppers toward EVs, despite the loss of government incentives.</p> <p>According to the firm’s 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Consideration (EVC) Study, 26% of new-vehicle shoppers surveyed in April said they were “very likely” to consider buying an EV, up three percentage points from March. At the same time, the number of shoppers who were “very unlikely” to consider an EV dropped to 18%, down four percentage points month-over-month. </p> <p>Overall, 25% of shoppers in 2026 now say they are highly likely to consider an EV purchase, an increase from last year.</p> <h2 id="h-fuel-prices-continue-to-influence-buying-decisions">Fuel Prices Continue to Influence Buying Decisions</h2> <p>One of the biggest drivers behind the renewed interest appears to be rising fuel prices. As gas costs increase, EV ownership is once again becoming more financially attractive, especially for drivers with long commutes or high monthly fuel bills.</p> <p>The findings suggest that while government incentives may help accelerate adoption, day-to-day operating costs still play a major role in consumer decision-making. Higher fuel prices can quickly shift attention back toward EVs, particularly among buyers focused on long-term savings.</p> <h2 id="h-affordability-remains-a-major-hurdle">Affordability Remains a Major Hurdle</h2> <p>However, the study also highlights a growing divide between interest and affordability. While concerns around charging infrastructure and range anxiety continue to ease, vehicle pricing remains one of the largest obstacle for many shoppers.</p> <p>“Despite ongoing policy changes, including the repeal of federal tax credits, a growing number of new-vehicle shoppers remain interested in EVs,” said Brent Gruber, executive director of OEM and EV solutions at J.D. Power.</p> <p>Charging station availability remains the top reason shoppers reject EVs, cited by 46% of respondents, though that number has improved significantly year-over-year. Charging times ranked second at 44%, while purchase price came in third at 42%. </p> <p>Interestingly, among buyers who said they were not likely to purchase an EV in April, cost jumped to the second most-cited concern.</p> <h2 id="h-consumer-expectations-still-don-t-match-reality">Consumer Expectations Still Don’t Match Reality</h2> <p>The report also found many consumers still have unrealistic expectations about EV ownership. Nearly three-quarters of shoppers who strongly oppose EVs said they would require at least 500 miles (805 km) of range before considering one, while 43% expect public charging infrastructure to be as common as gas stations.</p> <p>While EV adoption may not currently be accelerating at the pace many predicted a few years ago, the latest data suggests consumer interest remains alive and well—especially whenever drivers are reminded how expensive gas can become.</p>   </div></div>
