S&P 500 Adds 3 Surging Stocks in Major Shake-Up

S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Bloom Energy, Everpure, and Illumina will join the S&P 500 on September 21, replacing Molson Coors Beverage, Trade Desk, and Builders FirstSource. This rebalancing creates forced demand for index funds. The additions highlight themes in AI infrastructure and biotechnology, while a parallel S&P 100 reshuffle includes companies like Dell and Palo Alto Networks.

Three stocks are about to receive a powerful mechanical catalyst: admission to the S&P 500.

S&P Dow Jones Indices said Bloom Energy , Everpure , and Illumina will enter the benchmark before trading begins Monday, September 21. They will replace Molson Coors Beverage, Trade Desk and Builders FirstSource, respectively.

Bloom Energy is the largest incoming company, carrying a market capitalization of $74 billion. The company supplies fuel-cell systems that provide on-site electricity for data centers and industrial facilities, giving investors another way to play the power requirements created by artificial intelligence.

Everpure provides data-storage systems and software, while Illumina makes gene-sequencing tools used across research laboratories and healthcare. All three incoming stocks have gained at least 40% in 2026, meaning the index is adding companies that already possess market momentum.

Why S&P 500 Membership Matters for Investors

Joining the S&P 500 does not improve a company's revenue, margins or competitive position overnight. It does, however, create forced demand. Index funds and exchange-traded funds tracking the benchmark must purchase the new constituents and sell the departing companies to minimize tracking error.

That rebalancing can produce heavier volume and sharper price moves near the effective date. It can also widen institutional ownership and analyst attention over time. However, investors buying after an index announcement risk paying an inflated price if expected fund demand is already reflected in the stock.

The changes reinforce two powerful market themes. Bloom Energy and Everpure offer exposure to AI-related power and data infrastructure, while Illumina adds a recovering biotechnology name tied to long-term genetic-testing demand.

A parallel S&P 100 reshuffle will add Dell, Palo Alto Networks, Arista Networks and SanDisk while removing Honeywell Aerospace, Nike, Simon Property Group and Colgate-Palmolive.

Investors should watch trading volume, valuation and any post-inclusion reversal. The reshuffle may create near-term demand, but earnings execution will determine whether these gains ultimately endure.
