VIPS 2Q26 Quick Take: Results clearly missed. Revenue fell ~4% YoY, in line with consensus, but GMV declined despite the market looking for growth — the key issue.

Profit also missed. The shortfall stemmed from declining volume while fulfillment and marketing expenses rose in absolute terms, weakening operating leverage and lifting opex ratios.

Details follow:

1) Core issue: GMV turned negative. On growth, total revenue fell ~4% YoY, which is not great but matched consensus and was largely priced in.

However, GMV fell 1.6% YoY vs. Bloomberg consensus at +1.5%, with some sell-side even modeling growth above the online retail benchmark. The market expected underlying biz. trends to be decent and the revenue decline to be driven by returns and mix, roughly tracking the online sector.

In reality, the macro was weak and VIPS underperformed the online retail base further.

2) Ecosystem weakening across the board. Orders fell 5.5% YoY and active buyers dropped by ~1.2mn (~3%), both below expectations.

Order declines were steeper, while GMV held up relatively better on price, and the user base edged lower. From users to order volume, the business is contracting on multiple fronts.

Per management, GMV missed while revenue held up relatively better because the revenue–GMV growth gap narrowed on lower return rates.

3) Costs up despite shrinking scale. While revenue and volume declined, several expenses rose: marketing +6% YoY and fulfillment +1% YoY.

Though increases were modest, they are counterintuitive amid volume contraction and pushed up the combined fulfillment+marketing ratio by ~80bps, pressuring margins.

Versus expectations, total opex was ~RMB 4.45bn, about RMB 300mn above Bloomberg consensus. That gap largely explains OP of ~RMB 1.52bn vs. ~RMB 1.77bn expected.

By contrast, GPM broadly matched expectations, down only ~20bps YoY — a minor move.

4) Overall, both growth and profitability missed, and the trend deteriorated. Negative revenue growth is not new for VIPS, but it usually protected profit via tight cost control; that advantage did not show this quarter.

With a weak print, a negative market reaction is reasonable. Q3 guidance is routine, calling for revenue growth of roughly -5% to 0% YoY, broadly in line with 2Q.

5) With weak fundamentals, the investment case hinges on shareholder returns. Buybacks resumed after being paused last quarter due to the Sasseur outlet investment, but the quarter’s repurchases were under $100mn, below prior levels.

Per prior commitment, total 2026 shareholder returns (dividends + buybacks) are about $930mn. After deducting dividends paid and this quarter’s buyback, the remaining 2H buyback is around $500mn, implying a clear step-up vs. 1H.

At the current market cap, 2H buybacks exceed 7% of market cap, with full-year total returns above 13%. The buyback support is solid, though earnings pressure is real.

Net cash plus short-term investments stand at a bit over RMB 22bn (about $3.3bn), more than sufficient to fund buybacks. However, operating cash flow turned negative this quarter (RMB -370mn), and together with capex, cash outflow was ~RMB 750mn for the quarter.

This may relate to the Sasseur expansion and warrants monitoring; sustained negative cash flow could constrain buyback capacity.

6) Bottom line: assuming quarterly OP holds at the low end around RMB 1.5bn, full-year profit is ~RMB 7.0bn. On the current market cap, that implies ~6.5x earnings, near the low end of the valuation range.

With stronger 2H buyback support, downside after this negative catalyst looks limited. That said, fundamentals are weak, visibility on a trough is low, and near-term dip buying may not offer compelling returns — we stay on the sidelines. $Vipshops(VIPS.US)
