I believe the AI supercycle has already been fore ran and hence the market has been consistently demanding the exceedingly, overwhelming perfect beats to drive the euphoria; nitpicking and reading between the lines and inventing concerns when the FOMO fruits are roped for picking. The narrative for capex monetisation concern surface every now and then, and then the concerns on power shortage, etc. Any little bad news can knock the knights off their high horse at any moment. But the party must go on right?

HSBC reported weaker than expected profits. It is mainly due to an unexpected UK fraud-related charge and higher credit provisions linked to rising economic risks from the Middle East conflict, the Iran war.As for Singapore banks like UOB and OCBC, I do not currently see any significant direct risk, given their relatively limited exposure to the UK private credit market and the Middle East compared to HSBC.😁

Day 20: OCBC (May 2026) is strengthening its regional wealth management by acquiring HSBC’s retail and wealth business in Indonesia, adding S$6.6 billion in assets under management (AUM). The bank also launched Southeast Asia's first tokenised physical gold fund and revised 360 Account interest rates to up to 4.45% per annum effective May 1, 2026.

OCBC - OCBC's recent acquisition of HSBC's retail and wealth management operations in Indonesia aims to enhance its fee income and expand its wealth franchise in Southeast Asia. Especially in high-growth ASEAN markets where global banks are reducing retail and wealth operations, this strategic move comes as a way to diversify earnings sources. I am not surprised with OCBC's latest acquisition given the fact that they have been expanding into the Southeast Asia market, particularly in China as well. I believe OCBC can deliver strong results quarter after quarter as well as competitive dividend yield. What I'm looking out for is how they are going to manage business given the widespread understanding that interest rates may continue to be lowered, and whether special dividends will be given.

SG Bank Earnings Round 2: Can UOB + OCBC Match the Bar DBS Just Set? DBS just printed a record income quarter, kept the 15-cent capital return dividend, and still has SGD 2.6B of buyback firepower left through 2027. The bar is high. This week, UOB and OCBC have to answer it — and both are walking into the same headwind: a falling-rate world that's chewing into NIM. Two reports. Two very different questions. 🗓️ Wednesday, May 7 — $UOB(U11.SG)The most NIM-exposed of the big three. Consensus net profit ~SGD 1.4B (–8% YoY, –3% QoQ). MAS is more on the side of &#34;fighting inflation,&#34; but will do so in a very cautious manner, rather than turning fully hawkish.In other words, it's less like &#34;completely standing on the sidelines,&#34; and more like gently tapping the brakes first, then watching oil prices and the Middle East situation.

There is no point in trading the energy spike as the events flip-flops constantly. Staying out of this sector and just invest in areas within my circle of competence, like banks, REITs, Etc.
