Wall Street's fear gauges just flashed their most bearish readings in months, and the S&P 500 is less than 1.5% below its record high

$Goldman Sachs(GS.US) says its risk appetite indicator turned negative for the first time since the spring, hitting its lowest level since the early days of the Iran war, per CNBC and the WSJ

$Wells Fargo(WFC.US)'s buy/sell sentiment gauge crossed the -1 level last week, and Macro Risk Advisors' market sentiment score plunged to around 27 from roughly 61

Investors have been dumping AI names and piling into Treasurys. $SOXX logged nine straight losing days last week, its longest losing streak in 20 years

Yet the S&P 500 is trading near 7,719 at midday, just 1.3% below its Oct 6 record close of 7,818.93, and the Dow is up more than 500 points today

$Goldman Sachs(GS.US) itself frames the washout as a contrarian signal, pointing to lighter positioning, lower valuations and strong earnings

This is what a wall of worry looks like. When this many investors are already hedged and sitting in bonds, it takes a lot less good news to push the index to new highs, and the real test is whether AI earnings over the next two weeks give them a reason to come back

US homebuilder confidence just crashed to its lowest level since 2012

The NAHB/$Wells Fargo(WFC.US) Housing Market Index fell 3 points to 29 in October, the lowest reading since June 2012. Economists polled by Reuters expected 31

Every part of the survey got worse. Current sales fell 2 points to 33, sales expectations for the next six months dropped 5 points to 32, and buyer traffic sank 5 points to 18, its weakest since April 2012 outside the pandemic's onset

Builders are slashing prices to move homes. A record 43% cut prices in October, the highest share in NAHB's data going back to 2020, with the average cut stuck at 6% for a seventh straight month. 65% are using sales incentives, the 19th straight month above 60%

The driver is rates. The 30 year fixed mortgage averaged 7.40% last week per $Freddie Mac(FMCC.US), the highest in nearly three years, as the Iran war pushes oil and inflation higher and drags Treasury yields up with them. Builders also flagged rising costs for materials, construction loans and diesel, and more than a third reported immigration enforcement in their markets delaying jobs

Housing is where higher rates bite first. Stocks bounced on AI this morning, but builders are saying the rate shock has already reached Main Street. A record share cutting prices while buyer traffic sits at 2012 levels means something has to give, either mortgage rates come down or home prices do. And with the midterms on Nov 3, affordability is now a political problem too

MAS maintaining policy highlights domestic inflation resilience, contrasting Fed hawkishness. A hot US CPI print elevated yield pressures, making stepping back from rate-sensitive S-REITs prudent until rate paths clarify.

Tonight CPI results will be volatile for the market so could consider taking profit if so not want to risk capital. If stocks are down a lot, can ask if the fundamentals of the business or guidance have changed drastically or is just fear sentiment in the market. Very few can catch the absolute bottom of a favour stocks that you do not mind owning for years so DCA slowly and do not all in capital to sleep well at night.

Federal Reserve officials’ support for another rate hike signals persistent concern about inflation and suggests monetary policy may remain restrictive. Markets pricing in three additional hikes could increase Treasury yields, strengthen the US dollar and pressure equities, particularly high-valuation growth stocks. September CPI, expected at 3.6%, is pivotal: a higher reading may reinforce tightening expectations, while a softer result could ease rate pressure. As the final inflation report before the October 27–28 meeting, CPI may significantly influence market positioning and volatility, although employment data and other economic indicators will also shape the Fed’s decision.

Will CPI bring a pleasant boost to the markets? The markets have been rotating hard from tech to financials and value which indicates they are expecting more economic growth but with an increase in borrowing costs.
