    $Lion-OSPL APAC Fin S(YLD.SG)

    1. Context:

The Lion-OCBC Securities APAC Financials Dividend Plus ETF (SGX: YLD / YLU) provides focused exposure to key financial institutions across Asia-Pacific.

    1.1. Tailwinds:

    * Profit margins for Japanese megabanks and insurers (~20% allocation) continue to benefit from Bank of Japan rate hikes. South Korea’s "Value-Up" reforms (~15%) incentivize share buybacks and dividend increases. Meanwhile, dominant Singaporean and Australian banks (~40%) provide core earnings stability.

    1.2. Headwinds:

    * Spikes in U.S. Treasury yields compress risk premiums for Asian dividend stocks and pull capital away toward ultra-safe assets. At the same time, rate cuts by China’s central bank (~20%) pressure profit margins for Chinese lenders.

    1.3. Distribution Policy:

    * For its first two years (May 2024 to May 2026), YLD guarantees a payout floor of at least 5% p.a. based on the SGD1.00 launch price (SGD0.05/year), keeping income steady. However, from May 2026 onward, payouts pivot to a variable target of ~5% of prevailing Net Asset Value (NAV).

    2. My Trade:

I am currently vested in YLD, but I am holding off on adding aggressively to my position at current price levels. The rally toward the SGD1.50–SGD1.58 range has pushed valuations up significantly from its SGD1.00 IPO price. While I am happy to hold my existing units and collect distributions, buying more here shrinks the forward yield on fresh capital and reduces the margin of safety against potential market pullbacks.

    3. Takeaway:

High headline dividends are not guaranteed for life. Once the 2-year fixed payout floor expires, distributions directly reflect prevailing NAV. If macro pressures—like high global bond yields or regional margin squeezes—drag the fund’s asset value down, absolute payout amounts will contract. Buying dividend ETFs requires managing NAV entry points, not just chasing distribution targets.

The $Lion-OSPL APAC Fin S(YLD.SG) closed the week with a new all time high of SGD1.58, thanks to the good results of the 3 big Singapore banks.

The price has been supported by the 5EMA since 22 Jul, and closing above the upper Bollinger band on Friday, 7 Aug with a dragonfly doji. The volume for the last 2 trading sessions were above the 20MAVOL coupled with the dragonfly doji, showed strength of the bullish price action.

I am currently not adding more units as I felt the price is a bit toppish and may take a breather.

The $Lion-OSPL APAC Fin S(YLD.SG)ETF (launched May 2024) replicates the iEdge APAC Financials Dividend Plus Index, targeting the largest, most tradable, and highest dividend-yielding financial companies in the Asia-Pacific region.

It comprises 30 of the largest financial blue chips (banks, insurance giants, and asset managers) across APAC which includes Singapore's "Big Three" banks amongst the top positions.

This is currently a counterweight to my REIT portfolio in this see-sawing rate environment.
