$Tesla(TSLA.US) Chair Robyn Denholm denied a report that the board had looked to replace CEO Elon Musk, saying directors are “highly confident” in his ability. While we doubt the veracity of the story, we believe the Board has had discussions with at least one recruiter about outside candidates who could ultimately succeed Elon. We do not see anyone inside TSLA with the broad range of technical, strategic, and execution skills who could take Musk’s place as CEO.

According to the WSJ, the directors’ discussions took place about a month ago, as investors fretted about the amount of time Musk was devoting to his cost-cutting role with the US government. At around the same time, board members told Musk he needed to spend more time at Tesla, and Musk made no objections, according to the WSJ. With Elon now leaving Washington and returning to TSLA full-time, we doubt investors will respond one way or another to this story.
