Trump Pain Index (TACO Index)

Global Markets Investor created an index that combines the inverse yield of the S&P 500, the 10-year Treasury yield, the 30-year mortgage rate, gasoline futures, the 1-year CPI swap, and presidential approval ratings to form a single metric measuring economic and political pain.

Over the past 15 months, every significant spike in this index has been followed by a policy reversal or pause from the White House.

After the tariff spike in April 2025, a 90-day pause on tariff increases; after the September tariff spike, the government shutdown ended; after the December tariff spike, the threat to Greenland was withdrawn; most recently, Trump abandoned threats against Iran's energy infrastructure.

This pattern has been consistent: when Treasury yields spike and the stock market falls, Trump intervenes.
