Former China Datang General Manager Kou Wei Sentenced to Death with Reprieve in First Trial for Exceptionally Large Bribe Amount

On April 1, 2026, the Hinggan League Intermediate People's Court of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region publicly announced the first-instance verdict in the case of Kou Wei, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Group and General Manager of China Datang Corporation Ltd., involving bribery, accepting bribes through influence, embezzlement, and abuse of power by staff of a state-owned company. Kou Wei was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for the crime of bribery, deprived of political rights for life, and ordered to have all personal property confiscated; sentenced to twelve years in prison and fined RMB 3 million for the crime of embezzlement; sentenced to eight years in prison and fined RMB 1 million for the crime of accepting bribes through influence; and sentenced to four years in prison for the crime of abuse of power by staff of a state-owned company; the court decided to execute the sentences collectively, resulting in a death sentence with a two-year reprieve, life-long deprivation of political rights, and confiscation of all personal property.
