There are now five active de-extinction projects: mammoth, thylacine, dodo, dire wolf, and moa.</p><p>But the mammoth is a means, not an end. The tools Colossal had to invent to make de-extinction possible are spinning off into businesses that address plastic pollution, food security, human fertility, and biodiversity preservation. In October 2024, Colossal made 300 unique genetic edits into a single fat-tailed dunnart cell line for the thylacine project, the most edited animal cell at the time. Lamm told The Debrief that the team has moved from performing a handful of edits with roughly 40% efficiency to executing hundreds of simultaneous edits with approximately 90% accuracy. That throughput leap, powered by AI models that predict editing outcomes, is what makes the spinoffs possible. The connection is direct: the embryo development techniques created to save the Northern White Rhino or produce thylacine joeys apply to IVF, embryo screening, and reproductive medicine.</p><h3>The BioVault</h3><p>In February 2026, Colossal announced the world's first BioVault in partnership with the UAE, housed permanently at Dubai's Museum of the Future. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, directed the project. The vision is a global network of 7-10 distributed biovaults in biodiversity hotspots around the world.</p><p>This is where the business model gets interesting. Governments are funding the preservation of their native fauna as a matter of national strategy. The UAE invested $60 million directly into Colossal alongside the BioVault initiative. Lamm has said he expects to generate revenue through &#34;biodiversity credits&#34; similar to carbon credits, combined with Big Tech partnerships and government contracts that could collectively bring in billions annually.</p><h3>The Skepticism</h3><p>Colossal's claims have attracted real scientific pushback. In May 2025, the company's own chief scientist Beth Shapiro acknowledged that the dire wolf pups are &#34;grey wolves with 20 edits&#34; and that it is impossible to bring back an organism &#34;identical to a species that used to be alive.&#34; This was a major departure from how Colossal had previously described the project. The reason to pay attention is the platform thesis: the tools built for de-extinction are the same tools needed for the next generation of synthetic biology applications.</p><p>The plastic-eating microbe addresses a multi-hundred-billion-dollar waste problem. The artificial womb research has implications for the $25+ billion fertility treatment market. The multiplex genome editing capability, hundreds of simultaneous edits at 90% accuracy, is relevant to agricultural biotech, gene therapy, and conservation genetics. The BioVault model, governments paying for genetic preservation as a sovereign asset, is a new revenue category that didn't exist five years ago.</p><p>Colossal makes conservation technology available at no cost and has 48 conservation partners globally through its Foundation.
