Powerchip Chairman Frank Huang died Friday at the age of 76, media report, a 32-year veteran of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. He started his career in medicine before opening an electronics business and then co-founding Powerchip in 1994, with Mitsubishi Electric, the first Japan-Taiwan joint DRAM venture. The company grew quickly in the early 2000s to become the leading DRAM maker in Taiwan, before the 2008 global financial crisis hit. Powerchip delisted from the market, went through years of restructuring and debt repayment, and emerged in 2019 as chip foundry PSMC. It listed on the stock market in 2021, a long road back.
