Singapore turns 61 this year.

Maybe you've felt it too. SG60 was loud; this year is quieter. The radio was on all morning and not one NDP song came through. And there's always someone saying you stop caring about these things once you're older.

But it goes like this every year — everyone says it feels off, and then on the day itself, everyone celebrates as usual.

National Day was never about the spectacle. It's about the heart. So this year, we'd like to hand that heart back to you.

Here's the funny thing about National Day memories — what stays is almost never the big set pieces. It's the small stuff: a bag, a sticker, a paper flag.

• At school: sitting cross-legged on the hall floor at morning assembly in the 80s, belting out Stand Up for Singapore; later, the school trip to the NDP rehearsal, the first time you got that bag, and a friend insisting on peeling those little flag tattoos onto you because they were awesome.
• In the crowd: squeezing through Marina Bay waiting for the fireworks, the roar of the flypast going right over your head, the whole of you buzzing with it.
• At home: six years old, waving a tiny paper flag outside your HDB flat while your parents cheered on the Red Lions off the TV.
