Recently I bought a Gold DLC (Daily Leverage Certificate) and closed the trade within the same day using the 5x leverage. This was a short-term trading setup rather than a long-term investment. I wanted to take advantage of a quick move in gold while keeping my holding period very short.
A DLC is a leveraged product listed on the Singapore Exchange. The important word is daily. The leverage applies to each day’s movement and resets at the end of the trading day. A 5x Gold Bull DLC is designed to move about five times the daily percentage move of gold. If gold rises 1% in a day, the DLC may rise around 5% before fees and tracking effects. If gold falls 1%, the DLC may fall around 5%.
In my trade, gold was showing intraday strength and momentum. Instead of buying physical gold or a gold ETF, I chose the Gold Bull X5 DLC because it provides larger exposure with less capital. My plan was simple: enter when momentum improved, monitor the trade closely, and take profit quickly rather than hold overnight.
The reason I closed the position within a day is that DLCs are best suited for short-term trading. Because of the daily reset feature, holding them for many days can produce results that differ from simply multiplying the underlying move by five. Volatility and compounding can work against traders, especially when the market moves up and down sharply.
Before entering the trade, I looked at several factors:
Gold often reacts strongly to changes in interest-rate expectations, inflation concerns, and geopolitical news. When these factors align, short-term opportunities can appear quickly.
One thing I always remind myself is that leverage works both ways. The same feature that can amplify gains can also amplify losses. A small adverse move in gold can create a much larger percentage loss in a 5x DLC. That is why position sizing and discipline are extremely important.
My takeaway from this trade is that DLCs can be useful tools for traders who have a clear plan and can monitor positions actively. I prefer using them for tactical opportunities rather than for building long-term wealth. Taking profit within the same day helped me avoid overnight headline risk and the uncertainty of the next trading session.
For me, this trade was a reminder that successful trading is not about predicting every market move. It is about managing risk, sticking to a plan, and protecting capital first. Quick profits are nice, but surviving to trade the next opportunity is even more important.
Plan the trade. Manage the risk. Protect the capital.
