Microsoft: The Cost of Staying Ahead
Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to 60,000 eligible employees. The bigger story isn’t headcount. It’s capital allocation.
AI requires enormous spending, and Microsoft must prove those investments can deliver lasting returns. Reducing costs may help, but severance comes first, savings later.
For shareholders, I’m watching Azure growth, Copilot adoption and free cash flow. Buybacks are a separate decision, not the purpose of this programme.
Microsoft has the resources to lead AI. The question is whether the returns will justify the price of staying ahead.
