On November 5, 2026, the U.S. stock market suffered a brutal, broad-based sell-off that completely erased the previous day's post-midterm election rally, presumably driven by panic in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor stocks.
It first got my attention when I received multiple price alerts simultaneously. Seeing so many tickets tickets down make me realised a broad based selloff was happening.
Major Index Performance
• Nasdaq Composite: Plunged 5.52% (closing at 24,314.99), tumbling into correction territory (more than 10% below its recent record high) and wiping out roughly $2 trillion in market capitalization in a single day.
• S&P 500: Dropped 4.36% (closing at 7,353.73), marking its worst single-day drop since April 2025.
• Dow Jones Industrial Average: Fell 1,833.06 points or 3.44% (closing at 51,523.06).
Possible Key Drivers Behind the Sell-Off
• Midterm Election Fallout & AI Regulation Fears: The sharp decline followed the decisive Democratic sweep in the U.S. midterm elections. Investors panicked over the potential for a regime shift in Washington, anticipating stricter regulations, increased scrutiny, or slowdowns/moratoriums surrounding massive energy- and data-center buildouts critical to the AI boom.
• Chip and Tech Wreck: Semiconductor and AI infrastructure leaders were heavily penalized. Nvidia plummeted 9.2%, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) fell sharply, and the PHLX Semiconductor Index tanked around 10%. Other tech and hardware suppliers like Micron, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and SanDisk also saw steep double-digit or near-double-digit losses.
• Flight to Safety: As equities tumbled, investors rushed into safe-haven assets, sending the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note down to 4.84%. Meanwhile, Wall Street's "fear gauge" (the CBOE Volatility Index or VIX) surged sharply.
Now let's see how this transmit to the rest of the other markets today...
