Traded ValueIran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to two individuals familiar with U.S. intelligence reports, Iran has deployed dozens of mines in this strategic waterway in recent days. One source stated that the country still retains 80% to 90% of its small boats and minelayers, meaning its forces could potentially lay hundreds of mines in the strait.
Iran currently effectively controls the strait alongside its traditional navy, possessing the capability to deploy dispersed minelaying boats, explosive-laden vessels, and shore-based missile batteries.
Iran previously warned that any ships passing through the strait would be attacked. Since the war began, the waterway has effectively been closed.
U.S. officials said on Tuesday that the U.S. Navy has not escorted any ships through the strait, despite President Donald Trump stating on Monday that his administration is studying the options.
As crude oil prices rose on the news, major stock indices fell during the trading session.
The President wrote on Truth Social: "If Iran has laid any mines in the Strait of Hormuz, although we have not received reports that they have done so, we demand immediate clearance! If mines are laid for any reason and not cleared immediately, Iran will face military consequences of an unprecedented level. On the other hand, if they clear any mines that may have been laid, it would be a major step in the right direction!"
