In terms of economic data, the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the number of initial jobless claims for the week ending January 10 decreased by 9,000 to 198,000, lower than the expected 215,000; the number of continuing claims for the week ending January 3 fell by 19,000 to 1.884 million, also lower than the expected 1.897 million.

WuXi Biologics Faces Major Shareholder Reduction

In the Hong Kong stock market, the Hang Seng Index opened 171 points higher this morning, at 27,094 points. Tencent (700) rose 0.8%; Alibaba (9988) rose 2%; Meituan (3690) rose 1%; Xiaomi (1810) rose 0.37%; JD.com (9618) fell 0.52%.

WuXi Biologics (2269) opened down 3.39% at HKD 38.66, as the company’s major shareholder plans to place 150 million shares at HKD 38.52 each, a discount of 3.75% compared to Thursday's closing price of HKD 40.02.

YouRan Dairy (9858) raised a total of HKD 2.346 billion through a placement of old and new shares to its controlling shareholder Yili. The placement price is HKD 3.92, an 8.84% discount to Thursday's closing price of HKD 4.3. YouRan Dairy's stock price fell 5.11%.

CKH Holdings (001) opened 2.18% higher at HKD 60.75, reportedly seeking to list Watsons in Hong Kong and London as early as next quarter.
