Alibaba released the world model Happy Oyster on April 16, further expanding its AI product portfolio and targeting content production areas such as games and films.
Happy Oyster can generate 3D environments and interactive videos, supporting scenarios for movies, film content, and game development. Alibaba stated that the product is currently in a limited early access phase. The model was developed by Token Hub (ATH Innovation Division), a new business unit under Alibaba, by the same team behind the previous video generation model, Happy Horse.
This release marks Alibaba's latest move in recently launching AI products intensively. Alibaba has established cloud computing and AI businesses as core growth engines and has set a goal to increase related annual revenue from current levels to $100 billion within five years, representing approximately a five-fold increase over existing scale.
<h2>Product Capabilities: Shifting from Passive Generation to Active Simulation</h2>
Built on a native multi-modal architecture, Happy Oyster supports multi-modal understanding and joint audio-video generation. It has currently achieved two core functions: Wander and Direct, allowing users to real-time construct interactive, performable, and explorable AI digital worlds.
Alibaba positions this model within the &#34;world simulator&#34; genre, distinct from the passive workflow of traditional text-to-video models—which rely on user prompts and rendering to produce final footage. World models employ modeling of world evolution over long time spans, shifting content production logic from &#34;passive generation&#34; to &#34;actively simulating world evolution.&#34;
The technical objective of world models is to model and restore the physical and spatial attributes of the real world. They not only serve as a foundational layer for 3D content generation but are also widely applied in robot training and environmental perception for autonomous driving. Compared to the relatively mature technical paradigms of large language models, world models remain in an exploratory frontier stage.
<h2>Competitive Landscape: Tencent and Google Already Deployed</h2>
In the world model sector, Alibaba faces direct competition from major domestic and international technology companies. Tencent has launched a series of open-source world models called Hunyuan3D, while Alphabet-owned Google operates Genie.
One week before the release of Happy Oyster, Alibaba introduced the video generation model Happy Horse, claiming that the platform topped multiple global leaderboards upon launch and sparked significant response within China's AI industry. Alibaba has recently accelerated its pace of AI product releases and adjusted its internal organizational structure to strengthen commercialization capabilities, driving early investments into actual revenue.
Currently, Happy Oyster is only available for early access to select users, and the path to large-scale commercialization remains to be defined.
