An elderly investor in his 70s told me that he had always preferred simple investments. He grew up with the mindset that if you bought something valuable like gold, you simply held it and waited. So when he first heard about Gold DLCs on SGX, he was curious about why someone would trade gold with leverage. After speaking to a younger investor, he decided to learn more instead of immediately putting in a large amount. He started with a small position and quickly realised that a DLC behaves very differently from simply owning physical gold. When the gold price moved in his favour, the leveraged position responded quickly. But when the market turned, the losses also appeared much faster than he was comfortable with. He eventually closed the position and told me, “At my age, I don't need to make money quickly. I need to understand how quickly I can lose it.” That became his biggest lesson from the experience. For older investors who are more familiar with traditional investments, products such as DLCs can offer new opportunities, but they also come with risks that may not be familiar to them. Understanding the product, the leverage and the potential downside is therefore just as important as having a view on where gold or silver is heading.
