I am already in my 60s, and for most of my life, investing to me meant putting money into fixed deposits, shares and occasionally buying some physical gold. I never really understood why people were constantly watching charts and talking about leverage. Recently, my son introduced me to Gold DLCs on SGX. At first, I thought it was just another way to invest in gold. He explained that I could take a view on whether gold would rise or fall, but the leverage also meant that a relatively small movement in gold could have a much bigger impact on my position. I decided to try it with a small amount, mainly to understand how it worked. When gold moved in the direction I expected, I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly the position responded. But later, when gold moved against me, I realised that the same leverage worked both ways. I had spent decades learning how to protect my savings, and suddenly I was watching my money move much faster than I was used to. That experience changed the way I looked at trading. At this stage of my life, I don't want to take unnecessary risks simply because something offers the possibility of higher returns. I still believe there are opportunities in the market, including gold and silver, but I now understand that the most important question is not just “How much can I make?” It is also “How much can I afford to lose?” For me, that is something worth learning before putting any money into a new investment.
