🚨 China’s $527M Wake-Up Call: The End of Cheap Delivery?
China just fined Meituan, Pinduoduo (PDD), and Alibaba $527 million for food safety failures and “ghost kitchens.” This is not just a penalty. It is a clear signal that regulators care more about accountability than rapid growth now.
🔷 What has changed?
❤️Compliance is now expensive.
Platforms must use real-time video and conduct physical kitchen checks. That adds major costs. Meituan already posted a ¥23.4 billion loss in 2025 due to subsidy wars. New rules will squeeze margins further.
❤️Platforms can no longer hide.
Regulators also fined executives personally (~$2.8 million total). That breaks the old “we are just a middleman” defense. Now platforms are legally responsible for what their vendors do.
❤️Meituan is still the best bet.
Why? In a slowing economy, people order more delivery instead of dining out. Meituan controls approximately 65% of the market and runs a “Super App” for food, groceries, and medicine. That scale helps it absorb new compliance costs better than rivals.
🔷 What Analysts Say
· SPDB rates Meituan a Buy with a HK$120 target, citing less competition.
· CICC agrees that competitive pressure has “marginally eased.”
· Overall consensus (36 analysts): 27 Buy, 10 Hold, 3 Sell.
· Average price target: HK$110.45, which is +37.6% upside from the current HK$86.50.
🔷 Bottom Line
The “Wild West” of food delivery is over. Going forward, only large platforms with strong compliance systems will win. Analysts believe Meituan is the top pick in this new environment.
