Moderna: Cancer Vaccine Changes the Game — But Don’t Chase the Spike

Moderna’s 177% single-day surge followed a major breakthrough: its personalised mRNA cancer vaccine, intismeran, met the primary endpoint in a Phase 3 melanoma trial with Merck’s Keytruda, reducing recurrence and cancer spread. (Business Insider⁠)

This is a genuine validation of personalised cancer vaccines. Earlier Phase 2b data showed a 49% reduction in recurrence/death risk and 59% reduction in distant metastasis/death over five years. (Merck.com⁠) However, detailed Phase 3 data and overall-survival results are still pending, so regulatory and commercial risks remain.

Fundamentally, Moderna remains loss-making: Q2 revenue was only $100m, with a $800m net loss, although year-end cash guidance improved to $4.7–5.2bn. (Moderna Investors⁠) Valuation has consequently rerated dramatically, while technically the stock is severely extended after the historic gap-up.

Outlook: HOLD — not Buy at this level. Accumulate only after consolidation or a substantial retracement.

Option writers: favour 30–60 DTE cash-secured puts, targeting 15–25 delta, rather than chasing covered calls immediately. For bearish traders, consider 30–45 DTE calls around 15–20 delta, but only with defined risk.

The 3 local banks have stabilised a little following the previous few days of down sessions for the whole SG market. This is good for the longer scheme of things as historical statistics show that steep rise s n share prices are more likely than not followed by steep drawbacks afterwards. Let them consolidate, though I know many are still buying either for long term or just trying to jump on bandwagon.

Merck and moderna are good examples of what it means to get in and be patient. Lily is pumping so much money into research and with AI we might find a cure for diabetes. Get in and be patient. Trials take time for approvals. Diversify from tech!

Moderna shares jumping by 177% after its melanoma vaccine, developed by Merck, became the first mRNA cancer therapy to succeed in a Phase 3 trial, just shows the exact risk-benefit schema of investing in pharmaceutical companies. A brilliant breakthrough like the abovementioned could set new historic records and push the stock higher than ever, but also most of the time experiments fail and trials don't pass the tests. Congratulations to Moderna holders, but I for one will definitely not FOMO or regret not having a position in the stock because I know my own investing strategy.

Yay! US has shown their intent and are telling the bond market not to have ideas as they will defend yields no matter what FUD the narratives are.
