$Taiwan Semiconductor(TSM.US)

The market keeps focusing on short term headlines, but I see TSMC quietly strengthening its global manufacturing moat through its latest sensor JV with Sony in Japan.

What matters to me is TSMC’s unmatched process execution and advanced packaging capabilities. These are difficult for competitors to replicate. By securing key bottlenecks in AI computing and image sensors, TSMC continues to strengthen its position across the tech ecosystem.

I’d rather own great compounders than trade short term noise. When a company controls critical technology, I’m happy to let the compounding work in the background.

Sony’s talks with TSMC over joint venture development of image sensor production lines at Sony's new fab in Koshi City, Japan (Kumamoto) “are progressing smoothly with a view to signing definitive agreements,” Sony said, adding it has already set aside ¥10 billion yen for the JV, in which it will be the majority shareholder. TSMC’s operation in Kumamoto, Japan is recovering and will need some time to recalibrate equipment after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, tripping safety systems and halting production, media report. TSMC said the fab structure, water supply, power and safety systems are all normal, and detailed inspections continue. Construction of the 2nd fab has resumed.

$Sony Group Corporation(6758.JP) I think Sony has held steady at this level. I sold a batch of puts at 3378, expiring at the end of the month, and I'll see if they get exercised. If they are, I'll gladly accept it.

An explosion and fire at a Kanto Denka factory in Japan on 8/7 has raised concerns over a key semiconductor material called nitrogen trifluoride (NF), used by clients: TSMC, Sony, Samsung, Micron, Kioxia, etc., media report. Only 3 of 7 semiconductor plants built in Japan in 2023 and 2024 have begun mass production as of April this year due to the slow recovery in demand for non-AI chips, Nikkei reports, noting Japan’s Renesas opted not to start mass production at its Kofu plant due to slow demand for power semiconductors used in EVs, while Sony, Rohm, Sanken Electric are holding off on mass production at new facilities.
