Traded Value$Duolingo(DUOL.US) bought the MAX subscription for Duo, used the 'Zhuài Jiě' video conversation feature. For a foreign language idiot like me, the experience is much better than talking to AI like GPT. I guess it's probably based on preset prompts according to the course learning progress to generate content, thus better matching the user.
However, it also has drawbacks: during the conversation, it doesn't display subtitles in the native language. Not sure if it's a technical implementation issue or what. If your listening isn't good enough or your vocabulary is insufficient, you won't understand what 'Zhuài Jiě' is saying.
The good thing is, if you directly tell it in English that you didn't understand, it will change the topic and continue chatting with you, seemingly lowering the vocabulary difficulty. Also, after each conversation ends, there's a record saved, in text form for secondary reading. But there's also a problem here: for secondary reading, you can't practice, it just saves the text. The app should iterate on this later.
I think AI will definitely have an impact. Many people will vibe code some products to divert users, or those who are already quite capable will use general-purpose AI for learning.
But for some groups with not-so-high proficiency, Duolingo might be the best language learning App.
Sticking to my earliest judgment, Duolingo is the refined closed loop for AI implementation.
