China-Canada EV deal expected to benefit Tesla, Volvo, BYD first

Canada and China have reached an agreement to reduce tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs), allowing up to 49,000 Chinese EVs to enter Canada annually at a 6.1% tariff rate. Transport Canada will certify new Chinese EVs within eight weeks. Beneficiaries include Tesla, Volvo, and BYD, with Tesla having imported over 44,000 EVs to Canada in 2023. The agreement aims to streamline the approval process and boost sales for manufacturers, particularly affordable EVs priced below C$ 35,000 within five years.

China’s best-selling electric car Is the Geely Galaxy Xingyue

In 2025, the Geely Galaxy Xingyue became China's best-selling electric car, selling 465,775 units. The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV followed in second place with 435,599 sales, while the Tesla Model Y secured third with 425,337 units. The Xingyue, priced from 68,800 yuan, offers two battery variants with ranges of 310 and 410 kilometers. Despite BYD being the largest manufacturer, none of its models made the top three, with the BYD Qin Plus and Qin L ranking fourth and sixth, respectively. NEV startups like Xiaomi are also gaining traction in the market.
