🚗📉 China’s EV Export Rebate Is Being Cut - What It Means

Oh No …. China will lower the VAT export rebate for new energy vehicles from 13% to 9%, starting 1 April 2027. 🥹

This change could squeeze profit margins for Chinese automakers selling overseas.

For companies like BYD, Geely and XPeng, the key question is straightforward. Who will pay this extra cost?😟

Automakers have three choices. They can absorb it and earn less per car. They can raise prices overseas and risk losing their competitive edge. Or they can cut costs through better supplier deals and greater efficiency.

The challenge is that Chinese EV makers already compete heavily on price. If they cannot pass this cost to buyers, their profit on each exported car will drop.

BYD is one to watch closely. One analyst estimate suggests the net profit impact could be roughly RMB 5,000 per exported vehicle. This is an estimate though, not official guidance. The real effect will depend on tax calculations, what models are shipped, and how much they can save elsewhere.

For investors, stronger overseas sales no longer guarantee stronger profits.

Will automakers absorb the cost, raise prices, or find ways to protect their margins? Check out the full infographic for the impact breakdown, different scenarios, and what key numbers to watch.

It's the final Trading day of the week and our local market has stabilised a bit by the close. Much remains to be seen though for the banks as pressure on margins could show in upcoming earnings next month. Moreover, we could potentially see more partial sells with the reduced board lots.

Singapore bank stocks have pulled back sharply over the past few days amid concerns about interest rates, earnings growth and profit-taking after their strong run. I see this as a potential buying opportunity but would wait for valuations to become more attractive before adding, rather than rushing in after a few down days.

The market retreated and it’s about time. Healthy too! The OpenAI thingie? It will be forgotten again much like all the AI FUDs before. Remember the recent ‘Anthropic’ one? There will be an ‘AI bubble’ one when tech rallies again. People love stories!

Haha….The market especially tech was about to sell off regardless. I kept mentioning that the past few days. The OpenAI narrative was just an explanation that is redundant. 😂

Party day for the doom and gloom group. Though am curious why all of them come out on the same day? And then they go into hiding when markets are up. Haha. Trust your own conviction.
