Even though QQQ looked relatively weak, underlying breadth has improved noticeably, with more sectors participating instead of just the usual AI leaders.
The biggest surprise was the rebound in liquidity-sensitive names. Following Bessent’s Treasury bond-buying move, capital quickly rotated back into higher-beta assets, suggesting investors are becoming more comfortable taking risk again.
That doesn’t mean the index is out of consolidation, but it does show a healthier market beneath the surface. If breadth keeps expanding, this rotation could become more important than QQQ’s headline performance alone.

I expect $Meta Platforms(META.US) to continue to underperform the S&P 500 near-term as the outcome of a $1 trillion trial in Northern CA overhangs the stock. Like tobacco litigation 30 years ago, $Meta Platforms(META.US) is being sued by California and a multi-state coalition of attorneys general who have argued that $Meta Platforms(META.US) designed Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children and teens, improperly collected their data, and misled the public about the platforms' safety. The trial in federal court in Oakland before U.S. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers who was appointed by Barack Obama is likely to overhang the stock until the advisory jury renders a verdict in October. The advisory jury is hearing the evidence and issues a verdict; the judge is the ultimate decision-maker on liability, penalties, and remedies. On appeal, the case would go to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which is widely viewed as one of the more liberal circuits in the U.S. federal court system.
In the spring, Meta (along with $Alphabet(GOOGL.US) ‘s YouTube) lost a landmark social media case in California, in which a jury found the companies liable for harming a young user with certain design features in their apps and awarded her $6 million. Then, earlier this month, $Meta Platforms(META.US) was ordered to pay more than $940 million in the state of New Mexico for being a public nuisance and causing psychological harm to children. In the current state AG case in Oakland the plaintiffs are asking for compensatory and punitive damages which could total $1.4 trillion, essentially equal to META’s market cap. While $Meta Platforms(META.US) remains cheap at 15.6x 2026 Adj EPS vs +15% long-term EPS growth, the potential for a trillion dollar initial judgment and an unfavorable appellate process before the liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals could overhang the stock just like tobacco litigation impacted tobacco stocks for years until investors realized the tobacco companies could price future ligation costs into each pack of cigarettes and addicted smokers would pay it. Unlike tobacco stocks there is no pricing mechanism that $Meta Platforms(META.US) can use to offset the risk of litigation. $Meta Platforms(META.US) could settle this case for a few hundred billion dollars and the stock could rise but other litigation will surely follow.

The markets are poised nicely amidst the selloff due to rates jitter. The broad market index and the QQQ are interestingly at the 38.2 retrace of their fourth wave whereas the SMH looks like a wave 2 at its 38.2. Crypto has just started their engines. Today seems to be a red day for semis and memory.
I will be pleasantly surprised if we end up green - that'll be a huge/positive sentiment shift towards semis.Traditional defensive stocks are all showing some strength, as well as SaaS which I personally class as "defensive tech". That's the < long SaaS, short SaaS > trade. Moreover, if $Apple(AAPL.US) is up in the pre-market, then high beta semis tend to see a negative hit.Yields for 30Y treasury is at the highest point since pre-GFC at 5.32%. Similarly, the 10Y is at 4.74% - also at pre-GFC highs.Seems like it's due to a few reasons: rising oil prices (new highs for Aug) and renewed fears of rate hikes from the Fed. I don't think a hike makes sense right now, but time will tell what happens with Iran. The Fed drops their meeting minutes from the July meeting this week - will be an indication of where rates head.I don't see this as a long-term issue though. Just feels like traders are unlevering positions after a strong few weeks of momentum across semis and memory. Many institutions are now overweight high beta tech and are sitting on (relatively) huge gains MTD. Would make sense for them to unwind some of their positions / rebalance amid an uncertain macro environment.Fundamentally, I wanted to emphasise that the AI trade is stronger than ever after Q2 earnings. Semis and memory stocks get thrashed around from pillar to post when macro is so volatile.Like I mentioned the other day, if names like $Nebius(NBIS.US) or $Sandisk(SNDK.US) can have 10% green days, they can certainly have 10% red days.Overall, I am very bullish long term - just good to be aware of macro overhangs which drive short-term prices.Just need to ride into Jackson Hole next week.$SOXX $SPY $QQQ $SMH📢 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗡: U.S. Private Employers Added 9,500 Jobs Weekly as Hiring Rebounds, ADP Says - $QQQ $SPY

That does not mean we buy everything at the open.
My filter for a strong trend day:1. Index is holding its short-term averages2. The stock is already in its own uptrend3. It is near an entry, not 15-20% extended from the breakout or 9ema4. Volume confirms. No weak breakoutsIf it fails that list, I leave it. Most of my money comes from sitting out the junk and pressing the few names that are actually working.I’ll post the ones that clear this during the session. $SPY $QQQ $IWM$Invesco QQQ Trust(QQQ.US)$Invesco Nasdaq 100 ETF(QQQM.US)QQQ has entered consolidation after a strong short squeeze last week. Interestingly, VIXEQ suggests that market breadth is actually improving, with participation gradually expanding beyond the previous leaders.
However, the experience across sectors remains very different. Some areas are still attracting strong flows, while others barely respond to the broader rebound. That makes the index look healthier than the average stock actually feels.
For now, I’d view this as a rotation and digestion phase rather than a clear new trend. The key is whether breadth continues to expand and eventually reaches the lagging sectors.
