Context: VOO ended the week lower, but I’m still focused on building long-term exposure to the S&P 500. I’ve only just started my investment journey, so these pullbacks are an opportunity to think about how aggressively I want to build my position.

My trade: Holding my existing shares and considering a lump-sum addition if the S&P 500 approaches its 200-day moving average.

Takeaway: I’m starting small, but willing to deploy more capital if the market offers a more attractive entry.

The Numbers

STI: Friday’s close was 5,422.16, up 7.02 points or 0.13%, per Trading Economics citing SGX data.

Wall Street on Friday, in a session that ran after SGX had closed: the Dow finished at 52,215.16, down 652.82 points or 1.23%. The S&P 500 finished at 7,623.68, down 39.75 points or 0.52%. The Nasdaq finished at 25,955.34, down 53.52 points or 0.21%. The Associated Press tied the retreat to rising crude oil prices, which raised inflation and interest rate worries, and reported the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.99%. Singapore trades next on Monday at 9am.

Singapore data released on Friday: consumer prices rose 2.2% year on year in September, and 0.2% from August (SingStat). The HDB resale price index fell 0.1% from the second quarter to the third, while resale transactions rose 19.5% over the same period (HDB and SingStat). Private residential prices rose 1.4% on the quarter, and the office and retail space price indices rose 0.8% and 1.1% (URA and SingStat).

For comparison, the MAS 6-month T-bill cut-off yield was 1.95% at Thursday’s auction, and the November Savings Bond pays 1.67% if redeemed after one year (Little Big Red Dot).

My Personal Take

Of everything released on Friday, the 2.2% is the figure I would put next to every savings rate this week. Thursday’s T-bill auction cleared at 1.95%, which is 0.25 percentage points under that inflation rate, and the November Savings Bond’s first-year 1.67% is 0.53 under it. The comparison is rough, because a yield looks forward and a price rise looks back. Even so, the question I now ask of a safe rate is whether it clears 2.2%.

The best way to value high growth companies is using DCF (discounted cash flow) with multiple stages of growth rather than relative multiples or P/E relative to growth. With DCF, one can estimate the free cash flow assuming t1 years of super growth, t2 years of transition growth, and then perpetual or steady state growth. Contrary to what many value investors will tell you, perpetual or steady state growth for a company can exceed the growth in nominal GDP if the company has permanent advantages (first movers’ technology, patents, distribution, brand) that aren’t likely to be arbitraged away as more competitors enter the market.

S&P had one of its bigger one day drops yesterday in nearly 3 months as the broad selling continues. Chips sector was hit amongst the hardest, while consumers and other defensive stock gained a little. Back at home tdy, Reits gained quite a bit while banks held around the same.

When will the selling stop? High beta stocks are getting hit the hardest as investors pull out of the stock market to turn to bonds with higher yields amidst a relatively unstable equities market and expectations for yet another interest hike soon.

Context: The S&P 500’s 7,600 level is a key support to watch, coinciding with the 100-day moving average. I’m keeping an eye on whether the index can hold this level or if further downside is coming.

My trade: Using VOO as my S&P 500 proxy, I’ve started accumulating and may add more if the index breaks below support.

Takeaway: I’ll continue my monthly DCA, with deeper pullbacks offering opportunities to average down.

The US Treasury 10-year yield fell 19.3 bps to 4.952%, marking the largest single-day drop since March 2023. Rate hike expectations have vanished.

Global gold broke below $4,050 for the first time since early August; silver dropped below $55, while Brent crude rose above $113.

All signs suggest that rate hikes by year-end are unlikely, which will also impact US stock performance.
