What Caused Alphabet's USD 8.7 billion Accounting Paper Loss On Equity Investments?

🌟🌟🌟USD 8.7 billion accounting paper loss on equity investments seems massive. But on closer look, this is due to the standard GAAP accounting rules that mandate $Alphabet(GOOGL.US)must report all unrealised paper gains or losses on its income statement every quarter.

Alphabet is the single largest institutional shareholder of $SpaceX(SPCX.US)with 551.2 million shares, outside of Elon Musk himself. Long before Elon Musk became famous, Alphabet partnered with Fidelity to inject USD 1 billion into SpaceX. Alphabet alone provided an estimated USD 900 million.

When SpaceX shares slipped from their June high of USD 170.86 down toward the USD 143 range by the end of September, it triggered an astronomical USD 8.7 billion non cash paper loss for Alphabet.

The reality is Alphabet's underlying core operating income actually rose 30%. The business did not suffer. Its net bottom line was simply bruised by the volatile swings of Elon Musk's rocket ship.

In June 2026, Google signed a multi year agreement to pay SpaceX USD 920 million per month to access large scale AI computing facility and Nvidia GPUs from SpaceX's Colossus data center infrastructure.

Google and SpaceX are continuing to co-operate in space based machine learning & orbital data center concepts. This includes Google's Project Suncatcher initiative to test TPU machine learning infrastructure and laser link constellations in space.

By maintaining this huge anchor position in SpaceX , Alphabet has essentially hedged the future of global communications not only on Earth, but in Space too.

Exciting times are ahead for both Alphabet and SpaceX.

Dear Fellow Investors, Do you agree that the recent selloff of Alphabet is a great opportunity to buy the company? The current P/E ratio is only 14.7x.

The Fed just held rates at 3.75% to 4.00%, but 2 officials voted to HIKE

The vote was 10 to 2. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack both wanted another 25 bps increase

It's Cook's first dissent since she joined the Fed in 2022

The statement says inflation "remains elevated" and upgrades the economy to "expanding at a strong pace" from "solid" in September

The Fed already hiked in September, and futures now point to a strong chance of another hike in December

Chair Kevin Warsh also said one 2027 meeting will focus only on strategy, with no rate vote and no statement

$SPY held its gains after the decision

Two hawkish dissents on a hold day says the debate inside the Fed isn't whether to hike again, it's when. With growth running hot and the midterms on Nov 3, December is shaping up as the real decision

Watch for fed decision although it’s likely to be “neutral”, but it’s the tone they portray that may be more important.

Will the Federal Reserve Raise Interest Rate This Week?

🌟🌟🌟 All eyes will be on Fed Chair Kevin Warsh on Thursday October 29. He has made it clear the inflation is a stubborn beast. This means there maybe a rate hike before the end of December.

According to Wall Street analysts and Reuters, the Federal Reserve is expected to skip raising interest rates at this meeting but the market is pricing a 88% probability of a year end rate hike.

The market finished in the red last week due to a double whammy of a severe tech selloff and a sharp spike in global oil prices.

Nonetheless I will continue to dollar cost average $State Street Portfolio S&P 500 ETF - SPDR(SPYM.US)because market volatility is exactly when dollar cost averaging or DCA does its best work.

By buying SPYM, I have instant access to the best 500 US companies that track the S&P500. The expense ratio is the lowest at 0.02%. I am betting on the long term resilience of the entire US economy, not just a single sector.

Investing can be so simple with a great index ETF like SPYM.

This week brings more tech earnings as well as the Fed meeting. It is also a time cycle which brings fundamentals, technicals and time together into a seasonally strong period of a mid-election year. The most ideal situation will be more selling and a low into the end of the week which I am buying hands over fist into. Wave 4 looks to be completing in Tech and the broad index should give a C wave down into the week. And not to forget, sentiments are in the basement and everyone is bearish including people here.

It’s time to plant seeds! 💪🏻😊

🏆 [ Weekly ] GOLD AT THE CROSSROADS: $4,000 Pivot and the FOMC Catalyst 🚨

XAU/USD is testing a key level around $3,995 to $4,000. Selling pressure is picking up ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting on 27 and 28 October.

🔷 The Technical Snapshots:

Price has broken below the $4,100 range. The 4-hour RSI is deeply oversold at 26.98. That suggests downward momentum may be stretched in the short term.

On the daily chart however the broader trend is still weak. The daily RSI reads 33.21 with no clear signs of a turn yet.

🔷 The Big Event Next Week 🏛️

The Fed decision will move real yields and the US Dollar. Two clear paths lie ahead:

📉 Hawkish Outcome:

If the Fed keeps rates higher for longer, gold could fall past $3,950. A daily close below that level may open a drop toward $3,850 followed by support near $3,750.

📈 Dovish Outcome:

If the message is more accommodative, oversold conditions could fuel a sharp bounce. Look for a relief rally back toward resistance between $4,120 and $4,200.

🔷 The Verdicts

Be patient. $4,000 may not be the floor yet. Wait for a confirmed reversal on the 4-hour or daily chart before adding new positions.

How are you positioning your gold exposure going into the Fed meeting?

Iggy’s Journal: Singapore Consumer Prices Rose 2.2% in September. The 6-Month T-Bill Cleared at 1.95%

Saturday 24 Oct 2026 | Morning

The Numbers

STI: Friday’s close was 5,422.16, up 7.02 points or 0.13%, per Trading Economics citing SGX data.

Wall Street on Friday, in a session that ran after SGX had closed: the Dow finished at 52,215.16, down 652.82 points or 1.23%. The S&P 500 finished at 7,623.68, down 39.75 points or 0.52%. The Nasdaq finished at 25,955.34, down 53.52 points or 0.21%. The Associated Press tied the retreat to rising crude oil prices, which raised inflation and interest rate worries, and reported the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.99%. Singapore trades next on Monday at 9am.

Singapore data released on Friday: consumer prices rose 2.2% year on year in September, and 0.2% from August (SingStat). The HDB resale price index fell 0.1% from the second quarter to the third, while resale transactions rose 19.5% over the same period (HDB and SingStat). Private residential prices rose 1.4% on the quarter, and the office and retail space price indices rose 0.8% and 1.1% (URA and SingStat).

For comparison, the MAS 6-month T-bill cut-off yield was 1.95% at Thursday’s auction, and the November Savings Bond pays 1.67% if redeemed after one year (Little Big Red Dot).

My Personal Take

Of everything released on Friday, the 2.2% is the figure I would put next to every savings rate this week. Thursday’s T-bill auction cleared at 1.95%, which is 0.25 percentage points under that inflation rate, and the November Savings Bond’s first-year 1.67% is 0.53 under it. The comparison is rough, because a yield looks forward and a price rise looks back. Even so, the question I now ask of a safe rate is whether it clears 2.2%.

Cheers, Iggy 🦖

S-REITs are holding up well ahead of the Fed meeting. I feel the recent pullback was overdone.

Current valuation for blue chip REITs look too attractive now, especially names like CapitaLand Ascendas, CICT, Keppel DC REIT and Mapletree Logistics.

Meanwhile gold and Bitcoin are seeing a mild dip. I hope things stabilise from here and we see no more selling pressure. Today is Friday. Trade safely. Don’t “Cheong” . Next week is Fed meeting. Market respect Fed before further move.

Happy weekend to everyone.

🥇 Gold vs ₿ Bitcoin: Who Wins After the Fed Decision?

Next week Federal Reserve meeting is set to move both gold and Bitcoin. The same news can affect each asset quite differently.

Let’s us walk through four possible outcomes 👇

🟠 Scenario 1: Rates Unchanged Plus Hawkish Tone

• 🥇 Gold: May dip on a stronger US dollar and rising real yields

• ₿ Bitcoin: Could face selling pressure as investors turn more cautious

🟢 Scenario 2: Rates Unchanged Plus Dovish Tone

• 🥇 Gold: May rise as yields and the dollar soften

• ₿ Bitcoin: Could rally on improved risk appetite

🔴 Scenario 3: Surprise Rate Hike

• 🥇 Gold: Higher yields would likely weigh on price. Safe-haven demand may limit losses though

• ₿ Bitcoin: Sharp downside risk. Tighter conditions could force leveraged positions to unwind

🟢 Scenario 4: Surprise Rate Cut

• 🥇 Gold: May gain from lower yields and defensive flows

• ₿ Bitcoin: Could bounce on easier conditions. Recession worries might cap gains though

🎯 The main key difference

Gold is driven by real yields, the US dollar, and demand for safety.

Bitcoin is more sensitive to liquidity conditions, investor risk appetite, and market positioning.

📌 Bottom line

A hawkish Fed can weigh on both assets. A dovish stance can lift both too. Gold tends to hold up better during uncertainty. Bitcoin can deliver stronger gains when markets are in a risk-on mood.

Watch the Fed’s guidance, Treasury yields and the dollar. Do not just focus on the rate decision itself.

⚠️ Above write up are only possible scenarios, not guarantees. Sometimes Gold and bitcoin can be idiotic. Markets move on surprises not just what everyone expects.

Your turn: If the Fed shocks the market, which asset do you back. Gold or Bitcoin? 👇

Americans now hold a record 48.2% of their financial assets in stocks

That is the highest share in Federal Reserve data going back to 1945, per the Fed's latest Z.1 Financial Accounts for the second quarter of 2026

The dot-com peak was 38.7% in early 2000. The 2007 peak before the financial crisis was 33.5%

Households held $74.0 trillion in stocks, directly and through funds and retirement accounts, out of $153.5 trillion in total financial assets

The share jumped from 44.7% in the first quarter, and household net worth hit a record $195.9 trillion

That snapshot is from the end of June. Today the S&P 500 fell 1.2% and the Nasdaq 100 dropped 2.9%, its worst day since June 23

Retail ownership is a big reason dips keep getting bought so fast. But with nearly half of household savings riding on equities, a real drawdown now hits consumer spending harder than it did in 2000 or 2008. The next Fed update lands Dec 10

The 10-year Treasury yield just dipped below 5% for the first time since September 23

It touched 4.996% this morning per Bloomberg data, down about 15 basis points on the day

That is roughly 30 basis points below the October 5 peak of 5.31%

And it is happening with Brent crude above $111, the highest since May

Money is rotating out of AI stocks and into bonds. The Nasdaq is down 2.2% and the S&P 500 is down 1.4% as $Meta Platforms(META.US), $Tesla(TSLA.US) and $Amazon(AMZN.US) slide (AP)

Per Reuters, the US 10-year even traded below France's 10-year yield this morning for the first time in 13 years

Normally an oil spike pushes yields higher on inflation fears. This time the bond market is treating the AI selloff as a growth scare, and that is the bigger signal. If capex doubts keep spreading, falling yields could become the cushion the rest of the market leans on
